Albion’s environmental credentials
The senior management team at Albion Water was the team which conceived, developed and built the pioneering dual water supply system at BedZED, integrating drinking (potable) water with greenwater supplies (for toilet flushing and irrigation). This involved a groundbreaking ‘good neighbour’ waste water recycling plant together with rainwater capture and storm water management.
BedZED’s water and sewerage facilities were commissioned in 2000 and since then Albion Water has been building on that pioneering experience. Today it has a much wider offer, ranging from partial reliance on offsite water and sewerage systems to a full off-network, near-to-zero carbon solution www.zedfactory.com.
An innovative approach
Whilst legacy water companies still favour the high capex, high embedded energy route for sewerage and potable supply, Albion Water has developed a community-based, sustainable model which is lower cost, lower energy and actually creates new skilled green collar jobs.
Other advantages of Albion’s ‘new way’ include increased bio-diversity, enhanced natural environments, improved security of supply and buy-in from the local communities who feel a genuine sense of ownership and responsibility for their community’s water and wastewater assets.
